A small release, a big weekend
A mockumentary starring Charli XCX that opened on just four screens delivered a striking box office turnaround when it expanded this past weekend. After a debut that drew roughly $425,000 from those four locations, the film—now playing in a little over 500 theaters across North America—added about $1.7 million in its first wide weekend of expansion, bringing its domestic total to roughly $2.2 million. That jump represents nearly a 300 percent increase in weekend revenue from its initial bow.
Platform release in an unexpected window
Distributor A24 appears to be executing a classic platform rollout for the film—building word of mouth through a tight, strategic expansion rather than an immediate wide release. That approach is more commonly associated with awards-season titles arriving late in the year, not a Gen Z-targeted satire opening in February. Still, the tactic has paid off commercially: the project produced the third-biggest limited opening of the last five years, behind Marty Supreme and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City.
The premise and creative origins
The Moment is a mockumentary that lampoons fame, virality and the machinery of contemporary pop stardom. It follows Charli XCX as she navigates the fallout and maintenance of her fictional “brat” album’s viral momentum. The film marks director Aidan Zamiri’s feature debut; Zamiri, known for his background in photography and shaping public image for figures including Charli and Timothée Chalamet, co-wrote the screenplay with Charli XCX and Bertie Brandes. Charli also serves as a producer on the project.
Casting and notable cameos
Alongside Charli XCX, the cast includes Alexander Skarsgård (credited as Johannes Godwin), Jamie Demetriou, Kate Berlant and Rosanna Arquette. The film features cameo appearances by Kylie Jenner and Rachel Sennott, who appear as themselves.
Box office details and performance context
- Debut weekend: approximately $425,000 from 4 theaters (a standout per-theater average).
- Expansion weekend: roughly $1.7 million from a little more than 500 locations, a per-theater average near $3,000.
- Domestic total to date: about $2.2 million.
Despite playing in only a fraction of potential North American sites, the film outperformed several awards-season challengers in the weekend’s box office standings.
Critical response: mixed and divisive
Critical reaction has been sharply divided. On Rotten Tomatoes the film holds a 61% critics’ score; the site’s consensus reads, “Satirizing Brat Summer and the pitfalls of pop stardom, The Moment is a mockumentary that could’ve used sharper barbs, but Charli XCX acquits herself well as a presence that can bind even an unwieldy movie together.” Not all reviews were favorable: Screen Rant described the picture as an “unmitigated disaster” that, in their view, fails to land meaningful commentary on showbusiness excess and the pressures of fame.
What’s next for the film
A24 is continuing to expand the release. With its strong limited opening and viral-minded subject matter, the film’s future trajectory will depend on continued audience buzz, critical conversations, and how effectively marketing sustains interest as it reaches more theaters.
