Apple TV greenlights adaptation of Dan Fesperman’s novel
Apple TV+ has tapped two major film stars for Safe Houses, a limited spy drama adapted from Dan Fesperman’s 2018 novel. The eight-episode series centers on the murder of a CIA officer in Madrid and the tangled investigation that follows, with casting news confirming Ana de Armas and Jennifer Connelly in the lead roles.
Who’s playing whom
- Ana de Armas will portray Sofia Jiménez, a fellow CIA operative who finds herself framed for the Madrid murder.
- Jennifer Connelly will play Ambassador Elizabeth Winthrop, the widow of the deceased agent.
The story follows the two women as their separate pursuits of the truth draw them into a global conspiracy and toward an inevitable collision.
Creative team and production details
Safe Houses was created for television by Gideon Raff, best known for Homeland. Raff will executive produce and is set to direct multiple episodes. Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders) is also attached to direct several episodes. Production credits include Alexandra Milchan as an executive producer, with Paul Lee and David Flynn producing for Wiip. Sara Gonzalo is listed as a producer, and author Dan Fesperman will serve as a consulting producer on the adaptation.
No release date has been announced.
Why this casting matters
Ana de Armas is building on a high-profile run in action and thriller projects. Her recent screen work includes a standout role in James Bond’s No Time to Die, the Netflix action-thriller The Gray Man, and the John Wick universe spin-off Ballerina. She has also appeared in Ron Howard’s Eden and the action-comedy Ghosted. Safe Houses will mark her most prominent return to television since her early role on the Spanish drama El Internado.
Jennifer Connelly comes to the series after starring opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick and leading (and executive producing) the 2023 dark comedy Bad Behaviour. She also currently stars in Apple TV+’s science-fiction series Dark Matter alongside Joel Edgerton.
What to expect from the series
Based on Fesperman’s novel, the adaptation promises a tense, globe-spanning spy thriller with a female-driven core: a framed agent fighting to clear her name and a diplomat grappling with grief and intrigue. With Raff’s Homeland pedigree and Bathurst’s stylized directorial background, the show appears poised to blend procedural suspense with cinematic action and political maneuvering.
Status and next steps
Casting for the two leads is confirmed; further casting, production scheduling, and a premiere date have not yet been announced. Expect future updates on additional cast members, filming locations, and a release timeline as Apple TV+ moves the project into production.
